Gisborne Youth Concert Band won gold at the North Island Concert Band Festival in Hastings.

The gold medal won collectively for the band’s adjudicated performance, under the baton of Wellington musical director Alex Nyman, was not the only prize the young musicians brought home.

Soloist Lauren Grout and an ensemble featuring Sarah Martin, Lauren Ford and Emily Grout also won golds.

Chloe Lawrence and Nadia Stander received silver awards for their solos, and silvers also went to two other ensembles made up of a saxophone quartet (Lauren Ford, Emily Grout, Kim Thompson and Nicole Stannard) and a flute trio (Lauren Grout, Tayla Coburn and Emily St John).

The golds awarded to the Gisborne group were three of 11 presented to the 36 New Zealand bands, and one from Australia, that competed at the annual festival.

We had nearly 60 to the Tairawhiti Transition film on peak oil in Cuba It was very cosy an lovely. But I would like to know where my jaffas went. Hope that wasnt you Robson! We had some Israeli boys to the cinema this week. they came to two movies and loved it so much. I have never seen so much enthusiasm. I became quite puffed. History of Gisborne

The first landing site of James Cook's crew at Gisborne was commemorated with the erection of a monument in 1906.

The park where this statue can be found is currently known as a lovely, serene walkway where locals and tourists use for sight seeing and exercise.

On October 8th 1769 Captain James Cook went to New Zealand. He named a visible Gisborne landmark after midshipman Nicholas Young, a lad who was the first to sight New Zealand from the masthead of the "Endeavour". Cook then went to Gisborne and made the first interaction with the Maori. This historic meeting between the two cultures was the start of modern New Zealand.

"The descendants of Ngati One One (the Maori people) who met Cook that day still maintain Te Poho O Rawiri Marae (the meeting house) at the base of Titirangi Hill, approximately 1km from Port Gisborne where the ship will berth. Te Poho O Rawiri has over the years welcomed many famous dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Princess Diana among others."

Cruise ship's would be met by several Waka (Maori canoes), then one of New Zealand's top Kapa Haka (cultural) groups would welcome passengers as the ship docks. The passengers could also have the chance to be officially welcomed onto the local Marae.

Gisborne is a slightly isolated town compared to main centers. That's why Gisborne is one of the most self-sufficient towns in New Zealand. It supports a large area. Price of property is similar to Wanganui. However, Wanganui lifestyle properties are more expensive, due to the latter's proximity to Wellington.

Nevertheless, Gisborne has its own charm. It has a long, palm lined main street and a booming central business district. It has very well established homes and communities.
